Building Department

The State of Connecticut Building Code requires permits to be obtained and inspections of the work performed for most “construction” activities.  This document was prepared to help inform you when permits are required for work at your property.

Ultimately, it is the property owner’s responsibility to ensure that all permits have been granted and inspections passed for any work on their property. Additionally, when purchasing a home, or any other property, you should check with the Town to verify that all permits were issued and inspections approved for work on the property.  Otherwise you may assume liability for the unpermitted or uninspected work.

The Building Official is licensed by the State to administer and enforce the Connecticut State Building Code and all reference standards required to ensure public safety, health and welfare. The office issues all building permits for commercial and residential buildings and additions, as well as certificates of occupancy on new construction. The Building Inspector is both qualified to review and inspect concrete work, plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, sprinkler systems and the work of all other related trades. The Staff of this department interacts with the other staff of the Division of Planning and Community Development and provides advice to staff and elected boards and commissions on an as needed basis. The Sanitarians are part of the Eastern Highlands Health District.

When in doubt, please give the building department a call at (860) 871-3601, they are there to help you.

In most cases, responses to emails shall be handled during normal business hours.
